THE BRIEF

SCMF was commissioned by Sketch Events to develop and fabricate oversized replica drinks cans for use as functional recycling bins within an Every Can Counts campaign activation.Rather than simply creating display props, the 1.2 metre-tall cans needed to accurately reproduce the familiar geometry of a drinks can while functioning as practical recycling containers for use by the public. The associated Every Can Counts campaign launched at Piccadilly Circus during Recycle Week 2024 to promote aluminium can recycling and highlight how the material can be

TECHNICAL

DEVELOPMENT

SCMF undertook the 3D modelling and technical development required to translate the proportions and distinctive geometry of a conventional drinks can into a fabricated object approximately 1.2 metres tall.

The design also needed to accommodate its practical function as a recycling bin. An opening was incorporated into the top for depositing cans, while a removable lid provided access for emptying and servicing the container.

FABRICATION

The replica cans were fabricated from 2mm and 3mm mild steel, with the individual components formed and assembled to reproduce the cylindrical body and recognisable detailing of a conventional drinks can at significantly increased scale.

Particular attention was paid to the geometry and proportions so that the finished pieces remained immediately recognisable despite being approximately 1.2 metres tall.

The removable top section was integrated into the design to provide practical access to the internal recycling container while maintaining the appearance of the oversized can.

FINISHED

RESULT

The completed pieces combined large-scale prop fabrication with a genuine functional purpose, creating instantly recognisable recycling points that supported the visual identity and environmental message of the wider campaign.

The project demonstrates SCMF's ability to take a familiar product, digitally remodel it at a completely different scale and develop the practical fabrication details required to turn it into a durable, functional object.
