From Architect's Drawing to Workshop: Designing Bespoke Metalwork for Manufacture

Receiving a drawing is often the beginning of the fabrication process rather than the end of the design process.

On straightforward work, a fully resolved fabrication drawing may contain everything the workshop needs.

On more complex bespoke metalwork, there is often another stage:

Translating the design intent into something that can actually be manufactured, assembled, transported and installed.

At South Coast Metal Fabrication, this is where our Design & Technical Development and fabrication capabilities come together.


📐 Design for manufacture

Something can work perfectly in a 3D model and still be unnecessarily difficult — or sometimes impossible — to manufacture efficiently.

Before fabrication begins, we may need to consider:

  • available material sizes and thicknesses;

  • weld locations;

  • heat distortion;

  • fold sequences;

  • access for welding and finishing;

  • tolerances between components;

  • concealed fixings;

  • how the object will be transported;

  • site access and installation;

  • the order in which components need to be assembled.

Resolving those questions digitally is considerably cheaper than discovering them halfway through fabrication.

It can also allow the original design intent to be retained while finding a much better way of actually making it.


🖥️ Design and fabrication working together

Our Design Director, Robert Fung, spent more than a decade at Conrad Shawcross Studio, ultimately becoming Head of Special Projects.

His background includes complex sculptural fabrication, RIBA Work Stages, coordination with architects and structural engineers, Rhino and Grasshopper workflows, CNC manufacturing and the planning of large-scale installations.

At SCMF, that technical design capability sits directly alongside our bespoke metal fabrication.

That relationship matters.

The person developing a detail can discuss it directly with the person who has to cut, fold, weld and finish it.

Equally, fabrication considerations discovered in the workshop can feed directly back into the design.


When do we need this process?

Not every project does.

If a client provides complete fabrication drawings for a straightforward component, there is little value in redesigning it unnecessarily.

The process becomes particularly valuable when a project involves:

  • unusual or complex geometry;

  • expensive materials;

  • very tight tolerances;

  • difficult welding or distortion risks;

  • highly visible finishes;

  • complex installation requirements;

  • something that hasn't been fabricated in quite the same way before.

Those are precisely the projects where resolving problems before metal is cut has the greatest value.


From concept to installation

SCMF can become involved at different stages depending on what the project requires.

Sometimes we're handed finished drawings and asked to fabricate.

On other projects, the client may have a sketch, architectural intent, reference image or 3D concept that still needs technical development.
