Architectural metalwork is often most successful when the fabrication feels completely integrated into the architecture around it.

For a private residence in Reading, South Coast Metal Fabrication worked with Robinson van Noort to manufacture a series of bespoke architectural elements including substantial blackened-steel shelving systems and a double-sided glass vitrine.

The project required precision fabrication combined with a finish that deliberately retained the character of the underlying steel.

Translating Architectural Design Into Fabrication 📐

Working from the architect's design, SCMF developed the practical fabrication requirements needed to turn the concept into finished architectural metalwork.

The process required consideration of how the individual components would be manufactured, finished, assembled and ultimately installed within the property.

This relationship between architectural intent and practical manufacture is central to our bespoke architectural metalwork service.

Rather than simply manufacturing isolated components, the aim is to understand how the finished metalwork interacts with the surrounding interior.

Blackened Mild Steel

Unlike an opaque painted or powder-coated surface, blackened steel retains much of the underlying character of the material.

That places additional demands on fabrication.

Weld placement, scratches, surface preparation and workshop handling all become particularly important because imperfections cannot simply be concealed beneath a heavy coating afterwards.

Following fabrication, the steel was blackened, polished and lacquered to create the required finished appearance.

You can see examples of blackened steel, stainless steel, brass, copper and other surface treatments on our metal finishes and samples page.

Freeze-Fitted Brass Locating Pins

The shelving incorporated bespoke brass locating pins, providing a subtle material contrast against the blackened steel.

The pins were freeze fitted into the structure and allowed the shelves to be repositioned while retaining the deliberately minimal appearance of the furniture.

Details like this demonstrate one of the advantages of bespoke fabrication within high-end interiors.

Functional requirements can be incorporated directly into the fabricated design rather than relying on conspicuous off-the-shelf hardware.

Double-Sided Glass Vitrine

The project also incorporated a double-sided glass vitrine visible from two rooms.

Accurate fabrication was required to coordinate the metal structure with the glass components while retaining the clean geometry expected within the finished interior.

The completed project demonstrates SCMF's ability to collaborate with architects and designers on detail-driven architectural and interior metalwork, from technical development through to fabrication and installation.
