THE BRIEF
SCMF has designed and fabricated a range of bespoke Corten steel sculptures and decorative features for gardens and outdoor spaces.
The work ranges from geometric and circular sculptural forms to larger freestanding garden features, with each piece developed around its setting, scale and the client's design requirements.
Corten is particularly suited to this type of work, allowing the fabrication itself to remain relatively simple and precise while the surface develops naturally through exposure to the elements.
TECHNICAL
DEVELOPMENT
Each piece begins with either a client brief, reference imagery or an initial concept which is developed into a fabrication-ready design.
Depending on the project, SCMF can develop the proportions and geometry through drawings and 3D modelling before producing the cutting and fabrication information required in the workshop.
For external pieces, practical considerations such as stability, drainage, ground fixing, material thickness and installation are considered alongside the visual design.

FABRICATION
The sculptures are fabricated in the SCMF workshop using a combination of laser-cut components, rolled and formed sections, welded assemblies and fabricated platework depending on the individual design.
Corten can be used alone or combined with contrasting materials such as stainless steel, allowing the natural weathered surface to sit alongside more controlled polished or brushed finishes.
Where required, pieces can be trial assembled in the workshop before delivery, with mounting points and fixing details incorporated into the fabrication for permanent external installation.
FINISHED
RESULT
Each commission results in a one-off piece of fabricated metalwork designed specifically for its intended setting.
Corten develops its characteristic weathered patina naturally over time, giving outdoor sculptures and garden features a surface that continues to change after installation.
The collection demonstrates how the same material can be used across very different forms, from restrained geometric features to larger sculptural pieces, while retaining the distinctive material character of weathering steel.
