The Brief

SCMF was commissioned to deliver a package of bespoke Corten steelwork for a private residence in Ovingdean.

The project included a large feature wall clad entirely in Corten steel, a pair of Corten railings and two smaller Corten-clad planters integrated into the external steps.

The aim was to use the same material language across several architectural elements, creating a consistent weathered-steel finish throughout the exterior landscaping.

Technical Development

SCMF carried out the site survey and developed the fabrication details around the existing property and landscaping.

The largest element was approximately 3.5 metres long, 1 metre wide and 1.5 metres high. Rather than constructing a new wall, the Corten cladding was designed to wrap accurately over the existing structure.

The package also required Corten box section, which is not readily available in the UK. The required material was therefore specifically sourced and imported for the project.

Fabrication

The main wall was fabricated as a made-to-measure Corten cladding system designed to wrap the existing structure and create the appearance of a substantial solid weathering-steel element.

Individual sheets were carefully fabricated to suit the surveyed dimensions and joined using a neat, deliberately expressed rivet detail. This allowed the separate sections to form a clean and consistent continuous surface once installed.

The wider package also included the fabrication of two Corten railings and two smaller Corten-clad planters incorporated into the external steps, bringing the different elements together through a consistent material and fabrication approach.

Finished Result

SCMF installed the complete package on site, integrating the large-scale wall cladding, railings and planter elements into the surrounding architecture and landscaping.

Using Corten across each element created a consistent architectural finish while allowing the steel to develop the characteristic patina that gives weathering steel its distinctive appearance.

The project demonstrates SCMF's ability to manage a complete architectural metalwork package from site survey and technical development through material sourcing, fabrication and final installation.
