THE BRIEF
SCMF was commissioned by KitMapper to help realise a temporary illuminated artwork for Romford Market, created by artist David Shearing for Havering London.
The project required the artist's concept to be developed into a practical fabricated structure suitable for installation within the market environment.
TECHNICAL
DEVELOPMENT
SCMF developed the fabrication solution around both the artist's design and the practical requirements of the site.
As the installation needed to be erected every evening and removed again afterwards, the structure could not simply be fabricated as a permanent assembly. It was developed as a lightweight modular system, with push-fit connections allowing the individual sections to be assembled and dismantled repeatedly.
This allowed the practical requirements of installation, handling and storage to be resolved while retaining the artist's intended form.

FABRICATION
The structure was fabricated from aluminium box section, keeping the installation lightweight while providing the rigidity required for repeated use.
A key requirement was that the artwork needed to be installed each evening and taken down again afterwards. SCMF therefore developed the structure as a modular, push-fit system that could be assembled and dismantled quickly without compromising the appearance of the finished installation.
The individual sections were fabricated and trial assembled in the workshop before being delivered for use at Romford Market.

RESULT
The completed structure was delivered and installed at Romford Market as a temporary illuminated artwork, transforming the familiar form of a market stand into a large-scale light installation within the public space.
The project demonstrates SCMF's ability to work collaboratively with artists and creative organisations, developing unconventional concepts into practical fabricated installations.
