The Brief
Working with Robinson van Noort, SCMF was commissioned to manufacture a series of bespoke architectural metalwork elements for a private residence in Reading.
The project included large blackened steel shelving systems, a double-sided glass vitrine and associated bespoke metalwork, all designed as highly visible elements within the finished interior.
Technical Development
The project required close attention to the relationship between the architectural design and the practical requirements of fabrication, finishing and installation.
Details were developed to retain the deliberately minimal appearance of the metalwork while allowing the finished components to function correctly and be assembled and installed accurately on site.

Fabrication
The shelving was fabricated in mild steel with particular attention paid to weld placement, distortion and surface condition. Because the finished steel would remain visible rather than being concealed beneath an opaque coating, scratches, fabrication marks and inconsistencies could not simply be hidden during finishing.
The shelving incorporated freeze-fitted brass locating pins, allowing shelves to be repositioned while maintaining a minimal appearance. The project also included a double-sided glass vitrine requiring accurate fabrication and coordination between the metal and glass components.
Finished Result
Following fabrication, the steelwork was blackened, polished and lacquered to retain the character of the material while providing the required finished appearance.
The completed components were then delivered and installed at the property, creating a series of bespoke architectural elements integrated into the wider interior design.
